Now in its 4th year the Cape Epic is the premier Southern Hemisphere Mountain Bike Event. Based out of South Africa’s Western Cape the race takes a new route each year between two points; Knysna and Cape Town.

Riders can expect to take on some of the most awesome terrain in South Africa during a 9 day event that will challenge the character, endurance and technical ability of both the riders and their mountain bikes.

Teamwork is all-important if you hope to complete this World Class Epic.

Cape Epic 28 March – 5 April 2008

Next years Race will start with a time trial prologue in order to seed the entire field before heading West form the town of Knysna towards the Lourensford Wine Estate just outside Cape Town. Two person teams cover some of the most spectacular terrain in South Africa; Mountains, Plains, Desert, Forests, River Crossings, it’s all here in bucketfuls. . .

The route is characterised by dusty and demanding gravel paths, strenuous rocky uphills, thrilling technical downhills, magnificent river crossings and stunning forested single tracks." Absa Cape Epic.

Race Route

So far, the Race, in its 4 years has taken 4 different routes from Knysna to Cape Town. Details of the 2008 route should be published 6 months prior to the event. However, to give you a feel for the event the 2007 route is an excellent yard stick..

Stage 1 Knysna – Uniondale Distance: 101km, Ascent: 2660m

Stage 2 Uniondale – Oudtshoorn, Distance: 132km , Ascent: 2245m

Stage 3 Oudtshoorn – Ladismith, Distance: 128km, Ascent: 2425m

Stage 4 Ladismith – Barrydale, Distance: 121km, Ascent: 1285m

Stage 5 Barrydale – Montagu, Distance: 102km, Ascent: 1590m

Stage 6 Montagu – Villiersdorp, Distance: 111km, Ascent: 1565m

Stage 7 Villiersdorp – Kleinmond, Distance: 116km, Ascent: 1990m

Stage 8 Kleinmond – Lourensford, Distance: 75km, Ascent: 1285m

The 2008 event will be preceded by a seeding Prologue over 15kms with each teams time being added to their overall course time. Previously only the top 50 teams were seeded.

Why do we like this event? This is the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest Mountain Bike event. It’s a ball breaker with daily cut off times but it is doable.
